About the program:

 

Structural racism and inequality create persistent stressors that worsen mental health outcomes for the Black community in the United States. Mindfulness-based interventions have been shown to improve health in healthy and clinical populations. Mindfulness is both a trait and a skill that can be developed by practicing mindfulness meditation. Discover the positive impacts of mindfulness, self-compassion, and self-care through this free six-week program.

Program Format:

This program is delivered online via Zoom, with some hybrid sessions planned. It is cohort-based, meaning the same group of people takes sessions together for the duration of the program.

Who should take the program:

The program targets people of African ancestry living in Montgomery County, MD, who are interested in receiving hands-on training in mindfulness practices. Participants should prepare for a daily mindfulness practice of about 10 minutes

About the Instructor(s):

Kimberly Johnson (she/they) has practiced mindfulness since 2008. They are a faciltiator in training at the Center for Mindfulness Studies in Toronto and a certified yoga teacher.

​Is this class ok for total beginners?

Yes, this class is appropriate for beginner and intermediate level meditators.

Is this a religious group or program?

No, the AAHP Mindfulness Program is a health class where participants will learn practices and exercises to maintain and improve mental and emotional health.

Is this a therapy group?

No, this is not a therapy or peer support group, though the curriculum was developed to teach information and practices to help improve mental and emotional health. 

​

Will the sessions be recorded?

No. A session recap with recordings of the practices will be emailed after every session.
